To Tone or Not to Tone?

Cleanse, tone, hydrate, moisturize - these four steps form the basic skincare routine of many women (and men!). While most swear by cleansing, hydrating and moisturizing, is toning (the second step) really necessary or simply good to have?

Beauty aficionados continue to be divided over a toner’s efficacy and hierarchy of importance in one's daily skincare routine. Some skeptics deem the toner as a redundant step while devoted fans swear by its ability to provide additional cleansing (after washing with facial cleanser), and infuse nutrients into the skin while possessing soothing and pH-balancing benefits.

What is a Toner?

Think long, slim bottles of clear, water-based liquids lining the shelves
of beauty bars, and the toner immediately comes to mind. Toners
remove any last traces of dirt, grime, and impurities embedded in your pores after each wash, prepping your face for the rest of your beauty regime. Toners also inject moisture and smoothen skin by refining rough patches while improving overall skin tone.

The pH of our skin is naturally slightly acidic at about 5.5. When the skin's pH balance is disrupted, it can lead to dryness, irritation, and breakouts. A toner balances your skin’s pH to allow for better absorption of whatever products you will be applying on your face afterward.

Gone are the Days of Alcohol-based Toners

In the past, toners were primarily alcohol-based and used as astringents to tighten pores and remove excess oil from the skin, giving a firm and squeaky sensation that was commonly linked to a clean face.

Women with oily skin tend to gravitate towards toners with alcohol as it helps to reduce acne breakouts and unclog pores. They give a quick-drying finish, and immediately degrease skin that many women with oily skin find comforting.

In reality, these short-term benefits are outweighed by the negative long-term consequences on your skin. It leads to dehydration and damage to the protective skin barrier, leaving the skin vulnerable to contaminants and oxidative damage. Contaminants such as acne-causing bacteria and germs can enter your skin, and oxidative damage from environmental factors (pollution, smoking, free radicals in the air, and UV rays) can cause premature aging, resulting in the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and crow's feet.

As alcohol toners suck out the moisture from your skin and strip it of its natural oils, your oil glands go into overdrive by producing even more oil to compensate for the moisture loss. Your objective to combat greasiness is counterproductive.

Alcohol toners also break down your skin barrier and damage the lipids in it. A disrupted skin barrier leads to acne breakouts, inflammation, and a loss of moisture, leaving your skin parched, dry, and thirsty.

Packed to the brim with all the goodness of essential ingredients such as the Bulgarian Rosa Damascena hydrosol, aloe vera, glycerin, chamomile, dexpanthenol and butylene glycol, LY 14b Lotion Tonique promises a luxe toning experience like no other.

“Rose Royce” of All Roses - the Bulgarian Rosa Damascena

LY 14b Lotion Tonique is formulated with premium hydrosol from the “Rose-Royce” of all roses - the Bulgarian Rosa Damascena. It is one of the most popular forms of hydrosol, obtained by steam distillation from the Rosa Damascena, cultivated in Bulgaria.

The luxurious soothing and purifying sensation you will derive from the Bulgarian Rosa Damascena is unrivaled and incomparable to aqua or alcohol-based toners. The Bulgarian Rosa Damascena hydrosol is a natural non-alcohol astringent, which helps to tighten and tone the skin, leaving it looking refreshed and revitalized. Along with antimicrobial properties, the Bulgarian Rosa Damascena hydrosol adds and retains moisture, making your skin soft and smooth to the touch. Its anti-aging, anti-wrinkle formulation helps fight against free radicals and the effects of environmental aggressors. It also soothes sunburn and reduces skin sensitivity as well as repairs skin tissues.

With its soft floral aroma, the Bulgarian Rosa Damascena hydrosol also promotes emotional balance and a sense of well-being.

The Positives of Dexpanthenol

Another vital ingredient in LY 14b Lotion Tonique is dexpanthenol. It is beneficial for the skin in a myriad of ways.

Firstly, dexpanthenol moisturizes and hydrates. It acts as a humectant and emollient that reduces water loss while increasing skin hydration, essential for repairing an impaired skin barrier. Topical dexpanthenol acts like a moisturizer, improving stratum corneum hydration, reducing trans-epidermal water loss, and maintaining skin softness and elasticity.

Dexpanthenol’s moisturizing properties also reduce inflammation and keep the skin moisturized, It is frequently used to treat minor skin injuries, burns and sunburns,

Dexpanthenol promotes skin barrier repair by increasing the mobility of proteins and lipids (boosting collagen production) in the outermost layer of the skin, improving its elasticity and firmness.
Lastly, dexpanthenol promotes the regeneration of skin cells, essential for quick wound healing.

The Beauty of Butylene Glycol

Naturally derived from sugarcane, butylene glycol is a gentle exfoliant that can help to remove dead skin cells and promote cell turnover, revealing smoother, brighter skin.

It has humectant properties that attract and bind water, pulling in hydration to the outer layer of the skin, and keeping it hydrated and moisturized. By breaking down hard-to-dissolve active ingredients, butylene glycol improves penetration, helping LY 14b Lotion Tonique to perform more effectively.

Butylene glycol is also an emollient, coating the skin’s surface by creating a barrier that prevents water loss. Its antimicrobial and moisturizing properties also help treat associated symptoms in acne-prone skin.

Aloe Vera and Glycerin

With its soothing and hydrating properties, aloe vera and glycerin help soothe and keep skin moist.

Chamomile

Widely used in skincare due to its calming and anti-inflammatory properties, chamomile reduces redness and irritation to the skin.

Toner Mask Your Way to Supreme Hydration - 5-minute Skin Hack

If you want to improve the appearance and health of your skin, the secret lies in toner masking, where you soak cotton pads with LY 14b Lotion Tonique and apply them on your face.

What It Does

Toner masking instantly hydrates, calms and brightens your skin, in three to five minutes. It is the quickest way to prep your skin for makeup and soothe dry, inflamed skin. It also balances the skin’s pH level, reduces the appearance of pores, and imbues the skin with beneficial boosters such as antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.

Using a toner mask can help remove dirt, oil, and other impurities from the skin, leaving it clean and refreshed. It reduces inflammation and improves the overall texture and tone of the skin. Toner masking also helps specific skin concerns such as acne, hyperpigmentation and signs of aging.

You can toner mask whenever your skin needs an extra boost of glow or moisture. Once or twice a week is recommended.

What You Need

Use a hydrating toner such as LY 14b Lotion Tonique. Go for multi-layer cotton pads that you can easily separate into thin sheets so that you can maximize the benefits of LY 14b Lotion Tonique.

How to Toner Mask

After cleansing your skin, apply LY 14b Lotion Tonique liberally onto your cotton pad and stick to your face. For best results, ensure your cotton pads are thoroughly soaked with LY 14b Lotion Tonique.

Place the cotton pads on the parts of your face you want to hydrate and calm. Focus on areas that are prone to dryness and redness.

Once the cotton pad starts drying out, discard it. Do not wait until the cotton pad is completely dried up as moisture will be sucked out of your skin through osmosis instead of hydrating it.

Tone Your Way to Beautiful, Flawless Skin

Pour LY 14b Lotion Tonique onto a piece of cotton pad and gently dab the soaked pad over the face and neck. Formulated with nine nutrient-rich ingredients such that they complement one another to deliver the best possible results, LY 14b Lotion Tonique is your answer to well-toned skin, flushed with moisture and ready to reap the benefits of whatever is to come afterward.

Your Toner of Choice

Toners are a valuable addition to your skincare routine. Notwithstanding, it is critical to choose the right toner to appreciate its full benefits. It is never too late to imbue your skin with all the goodness it deserves. After all, you owe to yourself to take good care of it.
